SSCC #143 – Bedford Co. VA

A former Bedford County sheriff’s deputy charged with taking indecent liberties with a child has been released on bond.  Ernest William Grubbs was released on a $5,000 bond.  Grubbs is due back in court on November 2nd to advise about his attorney.

Considering he was fired from his job immediately and is currently awaiting trial it is hard for me to call him a full criminal since he’s not going to get away with it.  That was until the following.

Grubbs was a School Resource Officer at Liberty High School.

He was responsible for watching out and protecting those kids.  Yet he was a predator.  A predator put there at the command of the state, provided with the perfect cover to be browsing for victims.

State Sponsored Criminal Count: 143 – Ernest William Grubbs

Because what better way to hide as a child predator than in plain sight and have the state put you next to your prey.

Looks like it was definitely job related, and it looks like he was using his position to hide some drug use, too.

The warrant said Grubbs acknowledged writing, purchasing and producing
intimate notes found in the student’s room. He also admitted texting her
on a daily basis and at all hours throughout the day, the warrant said. […] A list of items seized by Virginia State Police investigators on
Thursday included a “wooden box containing drug paraphernalia” and a
“change purse containing a smoking device” from the school resource
    officer’s office
on the Liberty High campus, as well as eight evidence
    swabs. […]
On Sunday night, after the student’s father received two text
messages from his daughter that were meant for Grubbs, the student’s
mother searched her daughter’s room and found typed and handwritten
notes and cards “expressing love and intimate feelings,” the warrant
said. She also discovered “a blue shirt size 2XL.”
The parents reported those items to the sheriff’s office, county social services, the school systems and other agencies.
The student told investigators she and Grubbs had engaged in sexual intercourse at various locations, the warrant said.

There’s a disturbing new development in this one. Looks like he’s vanished with another teenage girl.

A 16-year-old Bedford County girl who has been missing since Sunday
night might be with a former sheriff’s deputy charged with taking
indecent liberties with a child, state police said.
    Audrey Marie
McCombs’ family last saw her about 9 p.m. Sunday and called authorities
when they noticed her missing Monday morning, said Virginia State Police
    First Sgt. Thomas Foster.
McCombs may be in danger, Foster said.
    Investigators
said they believe she is with Ernest William Grubbs, 47, a former
Bedford County sheriff’s deputy who served as a school resource officer
at Liberty High School and was arrested last month on 12 counts of
taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial
    relationship.
Grubbs and McCombs may be traveling in the region in
a gray 2004 Jeep Wrangler that has a soft top and Virginia license
    plate XBK-8176, Foster said.

No indication whether it was a forcible abduction or whether he had a ‘relationship’ with her and talked her into running away, though reading between the lines makes it sound like it most likely at least started as the latter.
