Goodbye Google Reader…

So Google Reader is going under and I’ve been trying to find a solution.  Feedly just sucks.  Some people like it but frankly their UI leaves a lot to be desired. I tried NetVibes, NewsBlur and a couple others.  All of them didn’t really spark my candle and were missing features here or there.

Today I discovered Tiny Tiny RSS and happy beyond measure.  I have my own hosted RSS feeder with mobile device support now. image

the contact link appears to be broken but I would like the link. Love your blog, have it on google reader.

I fixed the link, both in the post and in Windows Live Writer. I sent you an email last night. I’ll setup and preconfigure and account for you and two others tonight. For some reason they don’t allow me to say “enable these plugins by default.”

I hated Feedly too when they had changed their UI, so I fled to Google Reader. They’ve since added a ‘title view’ like what Google has, so I’m happy with it again. Tiny Tiny looked interesting but the setup looked too confusing for me.

They hide the blog listing unless the window is wide enough. Then to top that the phone app has been screwing up and marking unread items as read and has gotten stuck on single posts not allowing me to look at other posts.

Yeah I’m not fond of the mobile app, though I’ve never liked reading on my phone. Maybe it’s better on a tablet. Not sure what you mean by hiding the blog listing exactly, I can click to hide or show different categories.

I know its not any better on an iPad. Every once in a while, read items just show back up on top- then they filter for popularity and bury new stuff several pages in. I read some pretty esoteric stuff, and care not a whit for sorting by rating. Plus the format is, to me, obnoxious. I don’t want polish, dammit, I want substance.

What irritates me most about Feedly’s mobile app is that it marks an article as read when you open the article instead of when you close it. This means that if you go to another app while reading an article (i.e., going to the web browser or Facebook ) and Android closes Feedly as part of its memory management, when you go back that article is gone. (You can still find it if you show the read articles, but that can be a PITA if you have a lot of feeds.)

Sadly, it’s still the best one I’ve found so far. But I was never really that thrilled with Google Reader’s UI, either.

There’s an app for Tiny Tiny RSS for Android that works well and doesn’t have that issue. Feedly was giving me issues of opening the previously read item and then marking the new item I was trying to read as read.

I also had the habit of trying to view the blog list and exiting out of the App which was annoying.
