Ice Cream Machine out of Service
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 17:05The ice cream machine is going to be down for the night. The Short Lady with Grey Hair just informed me that my childhood cat just had to be put down. Her kidneys had shut down and treatment over the past 3 days didn’t improve it. She kept my mom company for the past 6 and half years after my dad passed away.
I might put some stuff up, but I think I’m going to find something more entertaining that staring at the abysmal problems created by our government.

DHS now planning on harvesting DNA
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 02/27/2011 - 13:13They probably just want the DNA to verify your identity. Except how would they do that unless they already had a sample on file? What is most disturbing though is that DNA is exclusionary, not inclusive. If the DNA doesn’t match you are clear, however if it does, there is a significant statistically likelihood you’re still innocent if the evidence is based on DNA alone. Other forms of evidence need to be provided to illustrate your connection to the crime.
Many probably wouldn’t care, however this information is becoming more and more sensitive due to genetic conditions. There is still the question of how exactly it’s going to be used, and if they’re going to try and skirt the 4th Amendment again. Never the less, the rapid acquisition of power by the DHS is very concerning, and they’re only gaining more.

Budget Woes and Taxes
Submitted by Janelle Barnett on Sat, 02/26/2011 - 23:06Here we are in the middle of a recession depression and Alexander Rodriquez is essentially getting out of paying taxes. The greedy ass baseball player, with a contract of being the highest paid player, has now figured out how to avoid real estate taxes that the rest of us have to pay.
When Rodriguez’s moves into his $6 million, five-bedroom penthouse his tax bill will be $1,150. In contrast, Stephen and Phyllis Franciosa pay $3,100 in taxes one their one-family home in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx.
The middle class is repeatedly hosed on taxes, yet those that make large sums of money don’t have to pay a dime? Taxes should have to be paid equally across the board, which means everyone pays the same amount. Taxes should be a flat tax. To take it further, everyone should pay the same dollar amount and not have it based on a flat income percentage. People have no right to vote to raise taxes when they are not going to be paying it. The idea of raising taxes on people who make more than $200k is simple for many who make less than $200k most are happy to say yes. What right do they have to vote away someone else's money? For all intents and purposes they are taking it by force and putting it in their own pocket.
If you are receiving money from the public coffers, you have no business voting. You are not actually paying or contributing to society, instead you are using force to make others support you.

My blog grew up today
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 02/25/2011 - 21:47I got my first piece of hate mail, and it was such a piece of work I felt it was best posted and responded to here. Definition of Narcissism
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/24/2011 - 17:28Today a new reference on the definition of narcissism was added to Webster's. Nancy Pelosi has now added her picture to Webster’s Dictionary.
"I have some friendly amendments," said Christine Pelosi, a political strategist, at the committee's session during the DNC Winter Meeting at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel Thursday afternoon. She is a member of the committee.
"You think I'm kidding," Christine Pelosi added, to surprised laughter from the room. The proposed changes, she indicated, came out of a discussion with her mother.
She actually rewrote the complements coming from her own party because they weren’t good enough. This woman is delusional, she feels that she is beloved by all of America, and if she was any more self absorbed she could be the spokeswoman for Bounty.

Hopefully this is a start of a new trend
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/23/2011 - 14:59A restaurant in Sea-Tac airport will no longer serve TSA agents.
May this beginning of a new trend, even better would be TSA agents quitting their job because they realize their excuse of “I’m just doing my job,” doesn’t actually matter.
H/T to Uncle.
Update: The comments in Uncle's thread are pure win. I was going to post a comment but I can't disrupt the theme of Win in there.
Any man who is willing to violate the rights of his fellow man because it's his job is unworthy freedom and liberty. There are those who are principled and are will to do the right thing even when it hurts, then there's the TSA. Many Nazi's claimed they were just doing their job during the Holocaust. Pardon me if I don't feel sympathy for them.

Dem’s worried about their free funding
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/23/2011 - 19:02So a Massachusetts Democrat came out today and made probably the dumbest statement he possibly could have.
The Democrat’s are worried that their free gravy train is possibly coming to an end. Unions are nothing more than mandatory democrat donation collectors. When you consider that their numbers are dropping, that unions have fewer members than ever, and the American people are now seeing the unions for what they are. With all of this happening, the Democrat’s are worried about how they are going to get their funding for future elections.
What we’re seeing now is their fear, they know it’s coming to an end if they can’t get the public to believe their lies again. Well if they can’t get the lies to be believed, all they have left is violence.

A disconnect from reality
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/23/2011 - 21:35So Providence in an effort to take care of some of their budget woes is looking at dismissing all of their teachers at the end of this school year. As a result the teachers union is up in arms and is trying to win support by using this wonderful statement.
How does the dismissal of the teachers compare to an act of war that resulted in the deaths of 2350 people? How does this even relate? Chaos and anxiety, war is controlled chaos, and why would the State Department be anxious?

So much for Carson City
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 18:14He’s taking one of the best parts about Nevada and trying to destroy it. Of course he does this just after getting reelected for another six years. He’s probably hoping that the serfs voters will forget by the time he’s up for reelection.
It’s yet another example of the government sticking it’s head where it doesn’t freaking belong. The thought of a business owner refusing to locate a business there because something is legal bugs the hell out of me. What would you call someone who refused to open a business in an area because they allowed gay marriage. Who cares, you aren’t being forced to use the brothel, but you have no business telling others how to live their lives.

Imagine that…
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 17:49The people complaining that the tax payers of their state should continue to pay through the nose for pay and benefits aren’t doing a good job.
There are no repercussions for their failure to educate their students. If one is punished for not doing their job, the union will step in to protect them. Many unions make contracts that require all new employees to join the union, despite their personal beliefs or feelings. Others don’t even ask, they just want the employment and don’t care. Some don’t see the moral issues created by unions.
Janelle is now having to fight again because it ends up that the exception her boss was informed about was only for religious reasons. He is currently working on making sure she is exempted. This incident however has now restoked the fire in the tinderbox to destroy this forced political contribution for doing a job. Unions are nothing more than parasites that live on the work of others.

Some are Bat Shit Crazy
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 20:32It ends up that there is a animal problem in a high school in Louisiana.
Some people seriously lack the ability to think. The bats present a health hazard to the students and those working in the building. I’m sure if it wasn’t a public school, OSHA would be breathing down their necks to get money. Think about that for a second, one agency would require their expedient removal for health and safety, the other would fine them for removing the animals improperly.
Overall this environmental crap has gotten out of control, the health and well being of people come first. Especially since it’s not as if the bats were nested there as we colonized America, the school didn’t even exist yet. Maybe the winged vermin are on the endangered species list because they made some poor habitat choices, including picking a home where a two legged predator lives.

New York City gun permits...
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 21:09It is so nice when then New York times actually provides us ammunition to use against gun control.
Getting a handgun legally in New York is a two-step process. First, applicants must obtain a license, which costs $340, takes about 12 weeks to process, is good for three years and requires a background check by the New York Police Department. In addition, fingerprinting costs about $100.

Why do we need the TSA again?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 19:29So the TSA today actually harassed a US Representative from Alaska to the point she’s returning home by boat instead of by plane.
While our congress critters should be put through this same mess that the rest of us are. However one should always be sure to never bite the hand that feeds you. Most likely though our all knowing leaders will just exempt themselves from this hassle while they ensure their serfs constituents are continually abused. It just another example how every incident involving TSA starts with “The Stupid Asshole”.

Quote of the Day–Edmund Burke (02/20/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 02/20/2011 - 16:24The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion. –Edmund Burke
[The American people have been fed numerous lies as of late. From lying about why the government needs to kill the internet, to the impending doom of an assured terrorist attack. Many believe them, others do not even really understand what they’ve lost. Today yet another danger of government involvement in the internet could be seen in China.
Someone who Janelle works with just turned 20 and lives in one of the sororities doesn’t understand what’s wrong with the TSA scanning machines or pat downs. Her comment was, “You get a physical from your doctor, how is the TSA any different.” She couldn’t seem to understand that government is was force, and the fact she had no voice in the matter was a problem. Government is force, and they will expand that force through deceit and claims of necessity. Not to mention she couldn’t comprehend it was A Security Theater.
Even more than that though, no one seems to understand these are not their rights to give up, and even more importantly they are not rights that can be removed from others. Not by law or by force of man can our natural rights, which include the right to be secure in our persons and property, can they be removed from us. For when we allow these rights to be destroyed, we shall begin our decent into serfdom and slavery. -B]

Blogger Roll Update

It’s a great instructional video on government.

Open Carry and BBQ
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 22:37Some friends have a barbeque joint in Moscow, and they give a 10% discount for open carrying. I was in Moscow so I decided I’d stop in, and ended up hanging out for four hours. While I was there I couldn’t help but take pictures.

When open carrying, you are a diplomat
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 02/18/2011 - 21:52The whole open carry incident in Michigan is getting annoying and it’s becoming annoying for numerous reasons. I stopped commenting on different threads because it seemed the majority of people just lacked critical thinking ability. It turned into a pointing game with people screaming that people were actually the equivalent of Joan Peterson and the Brady Campaign. All because they voiced their OPINION that carrying a long arm was unnecessary and runs a serious risk of causing damage. As Robb said, “you need to be prepared for the consequences”, that includes having people angry at you that would normally support you.

Something from nothing
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/17/2011 - 21:56So the unions in Wisconsin are currently going ape because the elected representatives have finally learned that if money going out is greater than money coming in, it is unsustainable. However some of the law makers fled to prevent the law from moving forward.
For those who can’t understand how bad this explosion of debt across the country is, here’s a video regarding the Federal Deficit and proposed spending cuts.

Here comes a new “necessity”
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/17/2011 - 22:44Evidently the FBI is 100% sure there is going to be an attack on US Soil involving a “Weapon of Mass Destruction.”
The question is, what are they going to use their new “necessity” for? Not to mention the fact that the government has claimed numerous non-existent dangers before.

Imagine That
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/17/2011 - 22:16It’s amazing what happens when you restrict firearms so much. People have to resort to hiring people who are “exempt” from the law to protect them. They outlaw particular types of tools effective for the job, and this is the result.
I guess it was all just a job creation plan for California that started way back, they just saw this recession depression coming.

The Government Protecting It’s Own
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 21:13The King County prosecutor has decided not to press charges against Officer Ian Birk regarding this incident.

A first person account of history
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 19:08Joe has gotten to talk to someone who was involved in the Manhattan Project. I highly suggest reading his presentation, it’s a great read for a nice first person account regarding the development of the implosion bomb.

The choice of tool doesn’t matter
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 20:35Joan Peterson has now admitted that she would be happy if gun deaths were zero, even if the total number of violent crime incidents increased. This is coming on the heels of two mass knife attacks on the East Coast.
The first occurred in Brooklyn killing at least 5 people and injuring two others using both a knife and running one person over. The next occurred in New Jersey where three elderly people were attacked in a restaurant.
If their goal is to make society safer, how is having a higher violent crime rate actually better? There is no screaming to ban assault knives, or to keep knives out of the hands of criminals. The tool the anti-gunners are attacking also happens to be one of the best tools for self-defense. A elderly person can effectively defend themselves from a youthful attacker who would instead kill them. Mrs. Peterson, go to hell, you have no business telling us to give up our guns for a higher crime rate. With a lower crime rate, society overall is actually safer, leave it that way.
Violent crime, is violent crime, the tool doesn’t matter, what does matter is those same tools save more lives than they take.

Why the TSA needs to go
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/14/2011 - 19:12When you see the following regarding someone’s experience with the backscatter X-Ray machine and someone opting out, it should be obvious why they’re doing it.
Remember, they claim the necessity is for our safety, but given who the TSA hires and comments like this, it’s to get their rocks off.
H/T to Uncle.

DC Metro randomly searching riders
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 02/13/2011 - 21:56This past December the DC Metro announced that it was going to start randomly searching DC Metro riders.
Evidently trying to travel to your job at work is grounds to consider you a criminal. Again the claim of necessity is much like that used for aircraft and these shenanigans even involve A Security Theater. This has absolutely nothing to do with security, but giving them more control. The TSA is out of control and it seems some still feel like they need more.

Change the tool
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 02/13/2011 - 17:11In San Diego evidently a cabbie either fell asleep or blacked out, he then crashed into 25 people, critically injuring six.
There has been no screaming for outlawing automobiles in the wake of this event. Unlike in the wake of Arizona. Actually the press is so light on it, it was discovered and posted in the GBC by someone in Australia. There has not been a single mention though of requiring additional safety devices as a result of this accident. Despite there being systems which can detect inattentiveness of the driver.
It becomes obvious that safety isn’t the real goal. People might claim it to be, but obviously if it was they would be screaming for changes with regards to automobiles after this accident.

Who is John Galt?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sat, 02/12/2011 - 18:02So here’s the trailer for your enjoyment. I didn’t even know they were coming out with a movie. If you haven’t read the book, I highly suggest you do. I’m reading it again because I read it a long time ago.

“The Gipper” Obama is not.
Submitted by Janelle Barnett on Fri, 02/11/2011 - 23:16Our fearless leader feels that he has the right to call himself “The Gipper”. The only person, other than The Gipper himself, who has the right to call himself the Gipper is Ronald Reagan.
The Gipper, for those who do not know, was a young college football player for The University of Notre Dame by the name of George Gipp. He died at a young age from strep throat at a time when antibiotics weren’t available yet. On his death bed this is what he said to his coach:
Ronald Reagan, before he was President, was an actor who portrayed George “The Gipper” Gipp in the film Knute Rockne, All American and was referred to as The Gipper. Reagan later used the line “Win one for the Gipper” in a political slogan in 1988.
His most famous use of the phrase was at the 1988 Republican National Convention when he told Vice President George H. W. Bush, "George, go out there and win one for the Gipper."
Obama has, in no way, earned the name “The Gipper” and how dare he try to refer to himself as such.

Mind your manners
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 02/11/2011 - 20:10Breda created a wonderful list of manners that you should follow when open carrying. These rules are truthfully common sense for most of us, but it’s still good to enumerate them.
- Be exceedingly polite - use words like "please," thank you," and "ma'am."
- Smile a lot.
- Do not touch your gun. Ever.*
- Do not call attention to your gun. Ever.
- Do not talk about your gun unless someone asks. Ever.
*Unless you need it, obviously.
Manners and attitude make all the difference especially since you are having to overcome the negative stereotype created by the media. Once when I was in Safeway a woman wide eyed and looking at me very nervously. She had walked up behind me while I was waiting in line. I noticed her reaction just after she walked up, I just smiled and said, “Hi.” She relaxed considerably but was still a little put off. After getting through the checkout line I smiled at her, said “Have a nice day ma’am” as I walked away. She not only but smiled back, but also said to have a nice day.
That is what we want, we want to destroy this negative stereotype. When carrying openly you are an ambassador for all gun owners. Your actions not only reflect on yourself, but on all of us. The above rules aid in accomplishing that goal.

A Compromise
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/10/2011 - 21:59So evidently there was a way for Janelle to opt out of the Union. However there was still a small caveat, the 3% that would go to the dues still has to go elsewhere. More specifically it has to go to a charity of her choice.
Then we had an epiphany. We’re going to just have the 3% go to the Second Amendment Foundation. I guess that's a compromise since I already send money their direction anyway. I would send it to someone that works against the unions, but I am not aware of any organizations that do so.
I highly recommend sending donations their way, they have produced very good results.

Robbery by employment
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/09/2011 - 20:57Today Janelle was happy she had a “job interview”. I use quotes because it ends up it was really just a job offer. It would be a regular day shift which makes life considerably easier on us. Rotating schedules and night shifts are a pain.
So the above was the “Yea”, now for the “Boo”. It ends up that this job offer had one string, one serious string which has placed my rage meter through the roof.

Patriot Act Dying?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 20:50The vote on the Patriot Act extension was today and there was a small surprise at the end.
It is disappointing that it was not a complete and utter blow out, but it’s still nice to see they couldn’t scrounge up the votes. Of course Obama is crying that it is necessary to protect our borders and national security. The only thing that Act has done is allow the government to abuse its citizens. Hopefully that pile of garbage will stay dead and expire, though they will probably find a way to resurrect it.

Quote of the Day–Bowers v DeVito(02/08/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 21:06[Some would read the above and think of it as a bad thing. I read the above and see freedom and liberty. The reason I see freedom and liberty in the above is because both of those require personal responsibility. I am personally responsible for my family and I’s safety, there is no one else to pass the buck on to. As such the state has absolutely no business what so ever limiting or restricting my access to commonly used tools for this purpose. -B]

Site Changes and Updates
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 22:07I did a bunch of backend work over the weekend and have been continuing with trying to do some other changes I would like. I changed the Trackback mechanism and am now using a different module. I got tired for it putting the pingbacks in the comments. If you see anything that’s broken let me know.
I’m currently working on a theme change which should allow the trackbacks and the similar content links to exist between the post and comments. I’m not sure if the theme change is going to be successful.
I’ve also done some reordering to the menu blocks trying to make things more user friendly. If you have any ideas on something you would like to be different let me know. Yes, I do this for me, but I don’t mind trying to increase usability if it’s a simple change.

Don’t Come Here
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 20:46Seriously it sucks! Stay where you are, believe me your better off. People from California have utterly destroyed where I grew up, and continue making it worse. They actually totaled it so bad I hate going back to visit family and friends. Every once in a while I meet someone who legitimately loves freedom that fled the hell hole that is California.
Let me put it a way these people might understand, stop destroying the pristine wilderness because you think it would look better if you changed how something was done. You moved here because you hated how you destroyed your previous location.
So let me say this to those wanting to leave California and find some place new, the Palouse sucks. There’s nothing to do within 150 miles, nothing but rolling wheat fields, and evidently we’re not that bright out here either. You just don’t want to move here, it totally sucks.
H/T to Alan.

Update: HB 1016-2011-12 Just Passed the House
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 11:32I just received an email from Joe Schmick:
For your information, HB 1016 just passed the House with a vote of 88-4. I voted in support of the bill. It will now go to the Senate for their consideration.
If you haven't written your Washigton State Senators yet, now is the time to do so. You can use my letter as a starting point.
Update:
Unsurprisingly the 4 nay votes were from the Peoples Republic of Puget Sound.
If you live in their districts, remember what they think of you come next election.

How do you F*** up the National Anthem?
Submitted by Janelle Barnett on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 11:25Christina Aguilera was chosen to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl 45. How hard can that be? Apparently for Christina Aguilera it was very hard.
Apparently, Christina Aguilera got too involved in her performance to notice that the line is not, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.” See the video below for her failed national anthem attempt.
The line Christina Aguilera erred on was, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.” According to a statement released by the singer, her Super Bowl flub was due to the gravity of the movement.
Read more: Christina Aguilera National Anthem Video: Super Bowl 2011 Lyric Error
I agree with TamSlick on this one:
Seriously, how do you not know the lyrics to the national anthem? That's like flubbing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" or "Twinkle Twinkle"...
Heat of the moment or not, you do not screw up the National Anthem of all songs, its just not done. No Excuses.
Christina Aguilera has now joined the many other celebrities who have fudged the National Anthem in one way or another.

Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 02/06/2011 - 20:34It creates a bunch of Sad Panda’s.
Un amazingly the ability to get concealed weapons permits has not resulted in a rash of road rage shootings, a raise in violent crime, or simple arguments resulting in more shootings. I what I loved seeing most though was this in the article.
Seeing that number increase year over year is a wonderful thing. Yet some still think we are children and should be treated as such.

Quote of the Day–Thomas Paine (02/06/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 02/06/2011 - 22:51“Liberty is the power to do everything that does not interfere with the rights of others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of every individual has no limits save those that assure to other members of society the enjoyment of the same rights.” –Thomas Paine, Plan of a Declaration of Rights
[I do not understand what is so difficult about this for people to understand. Maybe it is because I was raised in a very libertarian household. What I do in my house, on my property, with my friends is my business. No one, not my neighbors, not the city, not the state, not the federal government has any right to stop me except in the case of my interfering with the rights of others. The hard part though is the definition of the word right has been twisted and mangled to the point where people don’t really understand what a right is any more. Even more than that though, potentialities are commonly called actualities when they are NOT.
A right to have something provided is not actually a right. You can have rights to be able to do XYZ, but you do not have a right to XYZ. Because if you did have a right to XYZ, it means that someone else rights must be violated to provide it to you.
It is obvious though that when you step back, many liberties have been destroyed in this country. The damage from prohibition still lingers as people still attempt the same approach with other materials they dislike. The substitute for alcohol has been firearms and other drugs. Materials that truthfully are no one’s business but the claim for potentiality provides the power. I could care less if my neighbor wants to sit in their house and get high. I could care less about who has a relationship with whom. The bottom line is no one should be regulating what I can and cannot do that does not infringe upon the actual rights of others.
I was raised constantly hearing the following, “There are three types of people in the world. Those who want to be slaves, those who want to be slave owners, and those who wish to be neither.” I was raised to be in that third class. I wish more people actually wanted to live in this third region. If it wasn’t for groups one and two, this place would be a hell of a lot more fun. -B]

Rule 1 when it comes to music…
Submitted by Janelle Barnett on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 00:35So, I was working during the Super Bowl today and therefore did not see the halftime show. Not to mention The Bald One and I don’t have TV service. I did however, hear about the suckiness of it. The Bald One and I decided to watch video of the halftime show and find out how bad it really was.
First of all, you don’t try to channel Daft Punk. Secondly, you don’t try to cover Guns N’ Roses, even if you have Slash. Thirdly, you don’t spout about how you want Obama to educate the kids in the middle of the song, and then follow it with “Father Father Help Us, send us some guidance from above”. Lastly and most important of all, you sure as fucking shit don’t fuck with the man Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing!
So, Rule 1: Never fuck with the classics, it’s a great way to just piss us all right the hell off!
*The Bald One helped fill in my rage with proper verbiage where necessary.

This can only end badly
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sat, 02/05/2011 - 22:13It was announced yesterday that TSA employees are going to be allowed to Unionize.
So now the agency which disparages, disgraces, and abuses the law abiding American public as a bunch of children to be abused will now be allowed to collectively barging by disrupting air travel through out the United States. They have created a monopoly by denying any new alternative private airport screening operations. Now with a monopoly over the entire system, they can proceed to shut down commercial air-travel for the entire country. This isn’t like a pilot strike where you can seek a ticket from an alternative airline, if the check point is shut down no one is moving anywhere. I foresee when the first strike occurs, numerous lawsuits occurring because of the self imposed monopoly.
Unions are a skid mark in the underwear of our country, they have long outlived their purpose, and have proceeded to create inflated wages for those who do not really deserve it. People should be paid on the quality and amount of work they do, not because they have enough people working with them and can cause lost revenue for the company. Anyone who goes on strike has abandoned their job, and a replacement can be hired immediately, there should be nothing outlawing this, however some states have. In this economy there are many who could take that position, and economics then state your pay isn’t worth as much. The supply of people capable of doing your job currently out weighs demand. If you want a raise, earn it, do something unexpected, volunteer for a risky project, find a way to save the company money. Doing it by extortion should result in your immediate termination.
The union at this point is supposed to focus on working conditions. If you don’t like the working conditions find another job. Strikes will probably occur because they don’t like passengers talking back and would like laws past outlawing it. Shutting down all the travel across the country is a quick way to achieve your objective is it not? People stranded will be yelling to give them their demands. Currently passengers are subjected to court for saying no, and they win; that will probably change.
Who was the moron who though this would be good or beneficial for the American public?

Since when is doing engineering a crime?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sat, 02/05/2011 - 12:58In North Raleigh a man has been accused by a state Department of Transportation official of practicing engineering without a license.
The DOT official in question obviously does not understand what a Engineering License is, does, or what it is for.
News flash for the DOT thug employee. The point of a professional engineering license is to provide someone to be held accountable in the event of negligence. It is a certificate that states as my coworker put it, “This person is competent enough to be held liable should something go wrong.” Once you have a license you can the professionally seal designs and carry the liability. This is applied to designs and implementations, not studies.
There is no question despite what the DOT official claims, the person who wrote this report has not broken any laws, unless they sealed the document, or indicated that this work was done by someone with a Professional Engineering License. Doing the work of an engineer does not require a license, carrying the liability that goes with it does. Doing a traffic analysis, and establishing why a light is needed for public safety actually matches the definition of someone who is allowed to use the title Engineer.
The IEEE's formal position on this is as follows: "The title, Engineer, and its derivatives should be reserved for those individuals whose education and experience qualify them to practice in a manner that protects public safety. Strict use of the title serves the interest of both the IEEE-USA and the public by providing a recognized designation by which those qualified to practice engineering may be identified." It is generally a requirement in the United States to have at least a Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science to be considered an engineer and practice as such.
Emphasis mine. The burden of proof for engineering credentials in this case actually rests upon the individual claiming the light is unnecessary. The action if recommending a traffic light does not provide a danger to the public, however people pulling into traffic on a busy thoroughfare without a light is dangerous to the public.
Some have used this as a rallying cry to ditch government licensing. This license as I said before is used to distinguish those who have separated themselves from the rest of the herd. Even if private organizations took care of licensing and fees, you would still need legal recourse or anyone and their mother could claim they were an “Engineer”. The term “Engineer” actually carries legal weight for liability. However it would be nice to have ASME, IEEE, and ASCE get together to do the common portion of the licensing, and have each other organization do the specific tests for the fields. At which point the government should recognize those individuals as having satisfied the requirements to be labeled, “Professional Engineer”. It is annoying that each state you must be individually licensed in, there is no reciprocity.
Being a P.E. is not something that is taken lightly, ethically they are bound to report anything that they believe to be questionable regarding practice and safety. Marine Power and Electric made a fatal mistake when they asked my father to seal documents that he did not write and design. They threatened to fire him for his refusal, he promptly quit. The following day he was employed by the State Attorney General as contractor to aid in the investigation of Marine Power and Electric. Being raised by someone who would unquestionably do the right thing I learned many things, ultimately we all are our own companies and who we work for are customers. A person with a P.E. is liable for the work they do under that seal, even if working for a company.
Though the end of the article does call into question the character of the licensing board.
Who determines what qualifies as engineering-quality work, and when I must obtain a license to do so? If that is the case, the 4 year apprentice requirement should be removed, allowing people to seek licensure immediately. I can not do work without a license, thus I need one. As I said previously, a license just allows you to call yourself an engineer and seal documents. You can still do work without it. Sounds like some peoples heads have gotten a little to big on the Kool-Aid they’ve been drinking.
H/T to R Mason for the Email. R. Allen for the post I read 5 minutes later.

Quote of the Day–William Penn (02/4/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 02/04/2011 - 21:16“Neither despise, nor oppose, what thou dost not understand.” –William Penn, Some Fruits of Solitude
[America would be a much more comfortable and wonderful place if the tree of liberty was truly allowed to flourish without people attacking the branches that they dislike for lack of understanding. It is amazing the number of people who would wish the Gun Culture away because the do no understand it and cannot fathom why it would exist.
Even more though than the what William Penn wrote, I submit the following change, “Neither despise, nor oppose, what dost not affect thou.” That which affects you must be an actuality, not a potentiality. For just because a bat could be used in a brutal assault, should not cause them to be outlawed from possession.
Why does the government prevent me from using a suppressor for my own benefit? Because someone else at some other time despised it, opposed it, and outlawed it. True criminals still have the pleasure of use, but I as a law abiding citizen have been robbed of this branch of liberty by those who do not understand it. May new fertilizer come to the tree of liberty, that it may grow and flourish again. -B]

Update: Suppressor Laws In Washington–HB 1016-2011-12 (2/3/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 12:53HB 1016-2011 passed the rules committee and has been placed on the calendar for a second reading.
Previous posts on HB-1016 are here and here.
When I find out when the second reading will be, I will post it here.
Update 2/7/2011:It just passed the house.

Necessity is the plea yet again.
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 22:38I talked the other day about the idiocy of the “internet kill switch.” While browsing today I found out how bad their claim of necessity was. It’s the ultimate in creating “FUD”.
The bill, one aide said, would give the president the power to force “the system that controls the floodgates to the Hoover Dam” to cut its connection to the net if the government detected an imminent cyber attack.
At which point I’m going oh, really now. Here’s why:
Anyone who works around process control and automation knows that the computer networks used are separate and isolated from the internet. Why would they already be isolated you ask, because the government isn’t as afraid of an attack as much as the business. Utilities for instance very rarely lease lines or use communication paths they don’t own. They have shielding cables that also have fiber optics in side. They run communications at the same time they run the power lines.
Why is a business more afraid of an attack than the government could be? Lets say someone causes a protective system to fail to operate, at which point a fault is caused in the power grid. The result is a transformer exceeding it’s rated voltages, ultimately ending in a failure of the transformer. A transmission level transformer easily costs millions of dollars and can take 18 months to 2 years for delivery since they are no longer manufactured in the United States. All that time, that transmission line is out of commission. If this transformer is tied to a generator, that generator is now no longer able to produce and sell electricity from that generator for 2 years. Not to mention utilities have to comply with NERC-CIP regarding infrastructure security.
More are also screaming that these claims are “FUD”. Nevada’s Bureau of Reclamation, responsible for the dam, are extremely pissed as well.
So the thought of someone hacking in like Live Free or Die Hard is completely unrealistic. Seriously, that movie is like any other movie from Hollywood, leave your suspension of disbelief at the door. Unsurprisingly the morons in Congress do not seem to understand that Hollywood is not Reality. Of course though the statements from our Congress critters cause people to believe that the loss of their freedom is justified due to this possible catastrophe. [snark]They are so much smarter and wiser than we are, we must need to surrender our freedoms if they ask us to[/snark].
So please, remember if a politician is asking for something, seriously question the motivations, and most importantly, question any “examples” of dangers they use. TSA and DHS hasn’t caught any terrorists unless you include the domains they confiscated. The FBI and the DOD followed political correctness so hard that they allowed Ft. Hood to occur. So why the name of Zeus's Butthole would we hand over the power to shut down the internet. We have seen what governments really do with that power. Anyone who supports this bill is a Tyrant, no doubt, because, “Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom, It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.” Reject “FUD” for what it is.

Quote of the Day–Thomas Jefferson (02/02/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 20:35A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities. – Thomas Jefferson
[I came across this wonderful post the other day regarding who is paying what with regards to taxes. What stuck out the most for me though was this chart illustrating net incomes based off the earnings in a year.
Think about that for a second. People actually get PAID for having lower incomes. This is socialism no matter how you cut it, robbing the productive under force of law, to give to those who would rather not work. Why am I paying taxes to subsidize people who don’t want to work? I wish I could I’d stay home and do my hobbies all day, but instead I have to pay to support the bloated spending of Washington. The wife and I keep working harder to try and build up more savings, all we get to do in return though is pay more taxes. For those who say, “We all need to pay our fair share.” Anything but a FLAT tax is unfair. Why should I have to pay more in taxes because I work harder and am more productive? The economy is floundering and there is massive unemployment because people are finding it more profitable to not work. By Mr. Jefferson’s statement, as can be plainly seen, this is not the sum of good government. We are no longer free to regulate our own pursuits, and certainly the government is stealing the bread from labor, and this government is by no means wise or frugal. -B]

Why are “lists” so bad?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/01/2011 - 22:09People ask me why I object so abhorrently about the no-fly list, and why I am dead set against a list of people restricted from owning firearms. Today I found the shining example of why it’s so horrible from the UK.
…
This women was deprived of her right and liberty to return home without due process of law. Someone was allowed to discriminate against her and prevent her from free travel. As for a list of people restricted from owning firearms, it already exists as the NICS system. The NICS system is severely flawed and prevents those who can lawfully obtain firearms from getting them. All it takes is being charged and you’re forever black balled. Lists are just a way to discriminate without due process while looking like those running it are protecting us.

Prosecutors, where would the world be without thee?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/01/2011 - 21:20The kid made an absolutely dumb mistake. However this is not something that the government, most especially a prosecutor needs to be involved in. I had a run in with a dick prosecutor, it’s not fun. He and the other boy are still friends, from the description is was rough housing that went a little too far.
Mr. Prosecutor sees a way to make a name for himself and this is the result! Someone once said, “It takes a good prosecutor to convict a guilty man, it takes a GREAT prosecutor to convict an innocent one.” Even with records sealed, it will seriously screw with this kids life.

Why does the ATF still exist?
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/01/2011 - 20:52The ATFs gun smuggling program has finally gotten the attention of our elected representatives.
This whole sequence of events reads like the plot out of Enemies Foreign and Domestic. No spoilers here so go read it, suffice it to say, I’ve heard this play before hopefully this one ends better. Especially since the ATFs budget is up to get slashed.
The proposed ATF cutbacks, which would amount to nearly $160 million out of a $1.25 billion budget request - a 12.8 percent reduction that would also be 3.6 percent below the current budget - are outlined in a preliminary budget document obtained by The Washington Post. ATF spokesman Scot Thomasson declined to comment, because the budget process was not complete.
This agency continually harasses law abiding citizens who are doing no harm to anyone but merely minding their own business. Doing that though gets them more press time and funding that nailing someone with a pack of camels from across state lines. On the upside it appears that their plan to use smuggling as the justification to increase their budget may have royally backfired now that it had congressional attention that they were moving material across the border.
H/T to Alan.
