Never Piss Off Your Customer Base
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 22:40So some startup, previously mentioned here, has decided that it’s going to make a “social network” for gunnies. After I wrote that previous post, the gift that just doesn’t stop giving posted a response at Uncle’s place. I haven’t gone all Kevin Baker on someone this month, I guess it’s about that time.
Before getting to that though it should be noted that this guy is digging himself a hole so fast with his customer base that if it were the earth he’d be sitting at the core experiencing fission right now. There are numerous issues, especially given that he claims to be a site for “gunnies”, the biggest of which, he’s censoring comments. Otherwise known to our field as “Reasoned Discourse”.
It does appear he finally let the comment go through, however the fact he is moderating comments is rise for concern. I’m 99% sure there are deleted comments because Tango is supposedly comment #8 on that post. He’s the first one listed.
So given the crap storm that he created today, lets start.

Smoke and Blunder is Right
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 12:06As I have said before, don't be a dick. It never works out well for you and more often than not it bites you quite squarely on the ass.
For those who haven't seen it yet, a new kid on the block came out today and shoved their own foot down their throat. Now initially I didn't really see a need to comment on this because Uncle jumped on it and many others have blogged about it as well. What got me though was this comment from Tango through a DM.
The forum link? "You must be a member." Become a member and it forwards you to The High Road.
Wait, it did what!? You join, providing a username and password, and then it sends you to another website where you have to use a different username and password. Immediately upon reading that alarm bells started going off. Many people have a nasty habit of using the same credentials across multiple websites, but you reading this know better, right?
So my immediate conclusion from that type of behavior is that they are farming credentials, why I am unsure. But it is obvious that they are engaging in some back handed dealing listing people who aren't members, thus inducing them to sign up to complain, or inducing others to join thinking the site is legitimate because of the trusted membership.
Miguel went and did a nice post showing exactly what type of user listing I'm talking about. Those are the types of prominent users that would instill trust, trust that might cause you to sign up for a membership. Of course being a blogger, you would probably use your blog handle and very possibly the password for your blog if you do that bad thing of the same password across multiple sites.
If you signed up for a membership with these numb-nuts I suggest changing all your other passwords if you violated that rule. This site is anything but trustworthy and by their actions thus far makes them a house of ill repute. This is all speculation but given the facts as presently seen, I would be concerned if I had any transactions regarding secure credentials with them.
If you need a good password manager, I suggest KeePass which also has an Andriod Application.

The Ringtone Meme
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 18:48So Uncle posted a meme, I have no clue if he started it. It was simple and easy enough that I just couldn’t not participate.
So, go to YouTube and get the first video when you search for your ring tone. Well mine was already an earworm Wednesday.
Just search YouTube for “Bullet in My Hand”, it’s the music video.

Ooohhhh I’m Special!
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 19:10We’ll I’ve known that for a long time. I would say I’m short bus special but alas I never rode it.
Now there’s been a blogger award running around amongst the gun blogs, geared at the less read blogs. Arms are the Mark of a Free Man put me in his award list.
Liebster Blog Award:
The rules are:
- Copy and paste award on your blog. Check.
- Link back to the blogger who gave you the award. Did you miss the link? Check.
- Pick your five favorite blogs with less than 200 followers and leave a comment on their blog to let them know they have received an award. Huston we have a problem, yeah most of the blogs I follow are well beyond the 200 mark.
- Hope that the five blogs chosen will keep spreading the love and pass it on to five more blogs. Yeah, I could care less, it’s up to them if they want to or not. God knows I’m having trouble finding 5 that haven’t been done.
I’m probably flirting with the 200 followers now. I have 124 subscribers when I just checked feedburner, that’s a more accurate count than just looking at google reader stats. However my daily traffic is now about 120. I say flirting because a lot of that traffic aren’t really daily readers but people searching for stuff.
So I will try and come up with 5, that haven’t been listed, and these are in no real particular order:
*As a random note, my cat failed me and I was attacked by a spider while writing this. Best part is it looks like she pulled the insulation out that runs around my antenna wires which is how it got in. She’s planning to kill me!

Gunnie Ground Hog Day
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 02/02/2012 - 09:58So Jay asks the question:
Honestly it's a very close race. I'll tell both the stories and see if you can figure out which wins.
First up is the first time I took the wife shooting. It was one of our first dates and she shot just about everything I had. From the .44 Mag revolver, to the M1 Garand, to my little old 10/22. It was a fun date and I've got pictures of it around here somewhere. It was that date I also decided that I was going to either Bic my head or go with a buzz cut from now on.
The second option is the last time my dad and I went to the range together. We spent a good chunk of the morning shooting pistol drills switching between the Hi-Standard and 1911. The uncle I am named after was visiting as well. We spent a decent chunk of time looking for what was to become my graduation present. While at the range/gun store I told the clerk I was looking for a Remington 700 VS. He asked what caliber and I responded, "308 Winchester". He promptly responded, "What the hell are you planning on shooting with that!?" Without missing a beat I replied, "Two legged varmints at 500 yards." My uncle and dad burst into laughter.
We found a gunsmith and ordered it about a month later. We finally picked it up 10 months later on my 19th birthday. Hell that was a fun day too, but he never got to actually see me behind his gift to me. I finally got to the range a week before we said our last good byes and handed him a quarter with a nice .30 caliber hole through the middle taped to a paper plate with the date and range of 200 yards. He just looked up and grinned.
If I had to pick a day, it's that last day I spent on the range with my dad. I really miss that.

Thanks for the best month ever….
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 21:34So evidently I really must have done something right this month. I dang near went double my previous best. For anyone who has decided to stick around, sweet, I’ll try and keep the cream flowing.
The big item that really shoved this month over the top was my Open Response to Joan Peterson. Evidently that was a verbal lashing that people seemed to appreciate. For the record, when I wrote it I didn’t even really expect it to even be a blip on the radar so that makes it doubly awesome. By the way, as expected, there has been zero response or acknowledgement of my response by Joan. Given how it spread like fire it is hard for me to believe that she didn’t see it.
I also got a bunch of feedback that proved how much of a wonderful job I’m doing. I will have more on that later though. Sebastian touched on it today but I noticed something this afternoon and I need to do some research and connect the chronological dots.
Thanks to everyone who linked me, and thank you to Uncle that pushed me over the 7000 mark linking my A Taste of Home post. Which I’m glad to say is starting to take off. I’ll blog more on that tomorrow night though.

Quotes of the Day–Joe Huffman and Jennifer (01/17/2012)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 18:34There is very little to be gained by engaging them. Point out the absurdities of their claims on our own and public turf then let them fade away into the dustbin of history.
Joe Huffman – Quote of the Day – Sebastian
January 17, 2012
[This is a twofer for a reason since it’s all closely related. I did exactly what Joe says above right here for the rest of the world to see. Some have implied I wasted my time* and that there is no point arguing with Joan. They’re right, and as I said here there is no point arguing with Joan. So was it a waste of time?]
No, Joan's comments didn't have any adverse effect on me, but they might have on someone that's had similar experiences to mine. I put my experiences out there for those who have not yet gotten to a place where they can. You didn't just cover my six; you showed them you've got theirs too.
Jennifer – Reply to Well That Was Unexpected
January 17, 2012
[As I said yesterday,
I did not waste time arguing with Joan on her own site. I did not waste time trying to jump through her hoops for approval. I walked out in to the middle of the street and called her out for all to see, I did it here on my own site. I exposed her hypocrisy, attitudes, and her actions that prove how horrible her and her position is. I did it where the comments were open for anyone to participate. While doing so I was also stepping up and to help some friends. It helped one more than I realized it would at the time I wrote it.
I often say I do this for me. Well I do, if I don’t give out free ice cream well so what. I don’t get paid, I pay hosting fees out of pocket, so why would I waste my time arguing with the likes of Joan Peterson? I wouldn’t and never have. What I have done is step up to tell my friends I have their back and help expose to the world the evil that she is.
Honestly I don’t know if anyone like Jennifer talks about has been or will be helped by my post. I have to to yield to Jennifer’s experience which is far beyond my own in this realm. I would like to think it would and I can certainly see how. Ultimately though Jennifer’s point is irrelevant. It’s irrelevant because it did help a friend, and it helped her through the healing process of her own story.
Waste of time? I think not, it was absolutely worth every second spent. –B]
*He actually hated both the post and the video so much he closed the thread.

Well, That Was Unexpected
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Mon, 01/16/2012 - 21:48So I wrote a post and evidently it was well liked. I do have a few comments. First, thanks to all those who linked it. The quick list I’ve found thus far.
I’m sure I probably missed someone but the reason I am saying thanks was because like when I get a link from Uncle or Joe, it’s noticeable. (Thanks to Uncle and Joe for when you have linked me too BTW). How noticeable?
Evidently I said something that a lot of you reverberated with. Awesome, and again thanks to those that linked it. Now for my comments.
I am fully aware that wrestling with a pig is pointless. Just the same I think that arguing with Joan is pointless. So why would I bother writing that response? I did it because no one had stitched her statements together for all to see the hypocrisy she spouts in a clear cut form. I doubt Joan has read the post, I doubt even less that she’ll respond. As my mom said, “I’m not sure she will be able to read the whole thing and comprehend what you’ve said.” My mom would be right, Joan wont understand, neither will anyone in those groups.
The fence sitters however can understand, they can read, and they can understand what I’m saying. It’s the fence sitters that come new to this debate that may not be exposed to a clear cut statement of what each side really represents. I finally stepped in and wrote that because I saw a simple and easy hit to lay damage. Joan made some statements that were down right appalling and that were not exactly the most kind.
Ultimately I did what I normally do. I sat in the corner ignoring what’s going on, unnoticed myself, until someone does something down right rude, mean, and inexcusable. They made the double mistake of saying it about two people who are unbelievably nice and kind. Then I became the 300 lbs. gorilla in the room, hitting them so hard that I knocked them out of the room with nothing left to say. I know neither of them really care about Joan’s negative comments on a personal level, I just found them down right rude and offensive, especially given the theme of the post.
I saw a way to throw down while remaining clean relatively clean. If the pig comes back I’ll deal with it at that time, but I doubt she’ll respond because to do so she would have to acknowledge the facts. She hates can’t do that, she doesn’t know how. In writing that post though I also provided a pile of new ammunition for those who like wrestling with the pig. I don’t support it, I find it for the most part pointless, but some find it necessary.
The only reason I’ve been tacking up the CSGV, Brady Campaign, and Joan is because they started it. I participated in a vigil and they said I was most offensive. I remembered victims of violence I know that they would not count and they called me offensive. I remained civil through the whole exchange, I haven’t issued one piece of profanity. I haven’t even resorted to name calling. Joe’s right, they brought this on themselves. Besides, now they’re calling me a Jerk. (Feel free to go post comments in there. CSGV has no control of them.)
While some may view this as me fighting a pig, I view it as me standing up and saying “NO”. I stood up to support friends that while they may not have needed my support, but they certainly could use it. There comes a time when even a fly has to be swatted. There’s a phrase, choose your battles wisely. They choose to start this battle and they did not choose wisely. I didn’t set out to, “Nuke it from orbit,” but I will not say I’m displeased with the results. If I have one actual weakness it’s that I have a nasty habit of standing up to defend my friends. Even if that means I need to drop kick a pig that wants to roll in the mud. If that’s a weakness though, I find it a good one to have.

Quote of the Day–Robb Allen (01/13/2012)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 01/13/2012 - 17:45Numbers don’t mean as much as the blogger’s personal reputation with his or her readers.
Robb Allan – That’s a Nice Grouping You Have There
[I saw it when Uncle posted it earlier today. My immediate thought was of the recent Ocean Marketing fiasco. WizardPC pulls some numbers on the person complaining. Ultimately the blogosphere is now proceeding to nail his ass to a wall. Since it’s already in process, why would I bother to comment?
Well that quote above is just too damn good to let slip by. There are some folks, as Robb said, who have done some pretty nasty things to the community. Just because you have a limited readership doesn’t mean you don’t have influence. I have a small readership, and those of you who read, thank you. Even though it’s small, I do know that many of those who read also listen.
I try to remain in my comfort area where I’m knowledgeable and I strive to avoid ruffling feathers or “stomping on peoples junk” as I like to call it. The bottom line is I subscribe to a few philosophies that make me listened to.
First, Integrity once lost cannot be regained. No matter how hard I try, once I’ve done the damage I can never completely undo it.
Second: I try to make sure that when I speak I have something to say. If people are spending the time to read what I write, by god I better give them something for their time.
So just because you have 1000 readers doesn’t make you the be all end all. Just the same just because you have 50 readers a day doesn’t mean that you’re a nobody with 0 impact. Fact is if those 50 readers carry significant weight you’re single placed marking round will land an artillery barrage right on target. –B]

How To Know I'm Doing a Good Job
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 01/10/2012 - 15:52Perhaps most offensive, however, was a video posted by pro-gun bloggers Barron Barnett of Washington and Joe Huffman of North Central Idaho. The video shows pro-gun activists holding candles, saying “candles don’t stop violence” and then drawing their handguns and firing at paper targets that are supposed to “simulate the January 8th 2011 shooting in Tucson.”
This was a post by CSGV regarding their Too Many Victims vigil. The started off by hitting Weer'd, DoOT, Bitter, Miguel, Kurt Hoffman, and Lingoe. Many of whom they "outed". The title of their post implies that we "found humor" in the vigil. Really, I don't know of anyone who finds the topic of violence funny. I don't know of anyone who really laughed about the subject. What I did see though is a bunch of people get upset about others participating in the vigil in their own way.
At least two people in that video are "victims of violence" by the same rating as Joan, myself and Joe. Neither one of us were laughing at the thoughts of the injuries that came to loved ones. No instead we were focused on two things. One, remembering what happened, that is done through the candle. Two, illustrating the tool that can stop violence. A gun is a tool and has the ability to stop a violent confrontation in its tracks without even a shot fired. That's why the gun is in the picture. It is a statement that I refuse to be a victim and will triumph if someone brings violence to my door.
It’s difficult, if not impossible, to understand how pro-gun activists believe such comments were appropriate on a day when gun violence survivors and others were remembering those they have lost.
This coming from a group of individuals who circle around like vultures and are faster on the draw than a personal injury lawyer to dance in blood. When ever there is a shooting the gun grabbers waste no time to attempt to levy the situation for their political gain. See Virginia Tech and the recent Mount Rainier shooting for examples. They do not care about the people, they care about their political ends. Don't believe me, look at the blood dancing they did in Tuscon while the family that lost their daughter was saying the exact opposite.
Here they are telling me my comments about how a firearm protected my mother and my father in two separate incidents was inappropriate. While the blood hadn't even cooled with a ranger lying on the side of the road and they were blaming the National Parks concealed carry legislation, which did not aid the shooter and would have done nothing to prevent it. Here they are telling me to not think about those I could have lost.
The point of a vigil is to remember those lost and in this case, show how you will not be a victim. You don't have to be a victim. Being a victim is a choice, however CSGV and the Brady Campaign would prefer that being a victim becomes a requirement.
I'm being insensitive!? What about all the victims who are dead or were violated because of gun control policies? Just the same I light those candles for them. I light a candle for those victims you would ignore because it wasn't "gun violence." You're calling for further disarmament when you're misguided "common sense" has been racking up a notable victim count since the 90's. If you're pissed off about it, good, because that means I'm doing my job.
I think the real reason you're pissed is because without any serious organization we hijacked your whole campaign. We have shown just how irrelevant you guys really are. Your statement that it was offensive I will wear as a badge of honor consider the type of behavior and company you keep.
