Open Carry

In Which I Prefer Pullman
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 04/19/2012 - 20:47So here I am in BFE Idaho, in a small town that is a blink of an eye as you drive through. I have been open carrying for the most part unless I am wearing my coat or am wearing my staff shirt.
As I’m standing there talking with a couple hams an officer comes up looking for another officer, who actually happens to be a ham. We start getting the info for who he’s looking for and I notice he looks at my right hip a couple times. Immediately my brain locks on the cue. Currently I’m not worried at all, I’m surrounded by people I know, many of whom are also currently carrying concealed weapons. It just so happens that I’m just the one who doesn’t give a crap about someone being upset by seeing me with a gun.
After a brief attempt to pull his partner up on the ham frequencies since his PD repeater failed the conversation goes something like this. (Officer’s words, my words)
Can I get you to untuck your shirt and cover up your sidearm?
Any particular reason? Open carry is still legal in Idaho right?
Yes, it is legal, but a lot of people have noticed (him) and it is making some of them uncomfortable. I like that you’re carrying and I appreciate that you’re carrying, I just want to put people at ease.
(At this point I untuck again choose your battles wisely.)
Thanks.
A couple different observations. First, out of all the time I have been carrying, no one has really said anything to me about it. I know some people it does make them uncomfortable but how is this for a comparison?
Officer, that man over there is carrying a gun. I don’t like that and can you do anything about it?
Versus:
Officer, that man over there is black. I don’t like him being here and can you do anything about it?
What I was doing is perfectly legal and overall if people were noticing, he was just getting tired of having to calm the sheep. In that case I sympathize. I did discover though that the Sherriff for Idaho County is more of a FUD in that he doesn’t want people open carrying in cities when you drill down into it. So couple that with what happened while I was carrying in town we are starting to see a possible narrative.
I will give the officer the benefit of the doubt for two reasons. First he was civil and respectful. He wasn’t in a “respect my authoritah” mode. Secondly covering up created a new problem. Technically without a permit wouldn’t be able to conceal carry. He never asked to see my permit, even after switching to concealed carry.
Everyone I talked to that wasn’t there got a total laugh out of it though. It’s freaking rural Idaho, everyone around here is carrying a gun! I got the officers name but didn’t record it immediately there after.
Overall it was an interesting experience, doubly so for rural Idaho. I have heard stories of Moscow PD abusing open carriers, but Riggins isn’t exactly huge.
So after getting through all that, here’s a race picture.
Sadly I clipped the nose off the boat otherwise that would have been one bad ass picture. This boat is currently the only remaining turbine and the worlds leader.

Starbucks Appreciation Day (Starbucks Buycott)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 23:19So today was Starbucks appreciation day, however my visit to the coffee house was delayed by the wife’s 12 hour shift.
So initially I planned on buying myself some coffee and at the same time buying a bunch of Via to send overseas. There’s an old adage that was drilled into my head by my dad growing up, “No Plan Survives First Contact With the Enemy.” They didn’t have the big packs of Via at this Starbucks. The wife is going to check Safeway tomorrow after her shift and if that fails I’ll be picking it up at Costco or ordering it online. My current receipt is small but will be growing considerably once I get my hands on the Via or order it.

A DGU Without Even A Draw
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 08:50This story seriously was just a blast to read and there's a few notes that everyone should be jotting down and paying attention to. Go read the story, I'll wait.
- This was a a successful DGU without a single shot fired or person injured. The Brady Campaign and CSGV try to pretend that stuff like this never happens but it does and there were two such incidents within my own family.
- This incident played out the way it did due to situational awareness. He was paying attention to his surroundings and made eye contact with the suspect. Predators do not like prey willing to stand up to them. Doubly so to prey that can stop them with a permanency that cannot be undone.
- It was a 3 man team with easily identifiable behavior. Scout, Primary, and Get Away driver. All three were doing their best to conceal their identity while appearing normal but out of place to those paying attention.
To sprrdhawk44, stay safe my brother and fellow traveler.

A Personal Discovery
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 16:38Those that know me and spend time around me know that I carry anywhere I am legally allowed. This isn't a joke and it isn't an exaggeration. Going to the store, grab the gun. Going to visit a friend, grab the gun. Heading out on the boat, grab the gun. Getting dressed in the morning to do work around the house, grab the gun. To me carrying a firearm is as common as carrying a wallet or watch. As it should be.
I do this for a couple different reasons.
- The burden on my belt is much lighter than the burden of regret.
- Because I can.
- Because there is no advantage to myself by not carrying.
- Because it's my right.
- Because being prepared should not be frowned upon
So last night at the ham radio meeting it was business as usual. I was sitting rubbing my forehead because of a sinus headache while two members to my right were having a conversation. I was openly carrying my 1911 on a OWB holster so it was quite visible. Since I was in Idaho my give a crap meter was at about -20, even in Washington it registers only about a 1 until I get to the West side.
All of the sudden I head one of the men go, "Sir are you wearing a side arm?" I look up at him with a half cocked smile and say, "Yes sir, I am." Usually that is about the end of a conversation but he was a little more persistent than most and responded with, "Why are you carrying a side arm?" It currently was a polite question and certainly reasonable. I just politely responded, "Because I can." At this point he was shocked that I would carry a weapon and his voice showed it because he repeated the same question with a tone of disdain in his voice.
At this point I had a personal revelation. That type of behavior will place me in threeper mode at a speed otherwise only known to photons. Because I didn't think, I didn't blink, my face just went stern and I looked right at him and calmly but without any hesitation said, "Because it's my god given right."
That was the end of the conversation. He no longer pressed me, he no longer talked to me with disdain in his voice. I don't know if he was just inquisitive and it came off wrong it's hard to say. Considering he halted his current conversation to focus on my sidearm it's hard for me to think he was really just generally inquisitive.
That is the first time I've ever climbed the "threeper hill" and used the it's my right argument. I will say in this case it was quite effective and given my headache at the moment I liked it's nuke the site from orbit effect. That said I prefer a much more tactical approach to sway people, but it has now been established that if you treat me as a substandard person for carrying a gun, I will go threeper on your ass.
Doubly entertaining was about 5 minutes later another buddy of mine showed up to the meeting and was open carrying as well. The icing on the cake was we were both sitting next to each other. I'm not sure if the guy noticed or not, I really don't care. But I wasn't the only one in the room any more and it made it all the better. Sadly the wife was busy so she wasn't with me, otherwise she would have been open carrying her's as well.

And Nothing Happened
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sun, 07/03/2011 - 00:09Went and picked up my boat today and stopped by the store on our way back from Pullman. I was open carrying cause it was freaking hot. As I walked through the checkout line the clerk asked me if I was an off off duty cop. I chuckled and said, “No, I just believe in being prepared to defend myself and in the process exercise my rights.” It is especially nice to carry it today considering what it is.
Overall he was actually quite happy with it and was interested in what I was carrying. He was even further surprised to hear the wife normally carries as well. Sadly there were people behind us in line so the conversation ended up getting rushed. Ultimately though yet again I have carried my firearm, as so many times before, and it hasn’t just magically jumped out of it’s holster and shot someone. CSGV and the Brady Bunch keep saying that it will result in blood in the streets or that it will alarm citizens. The only real behavior I’ve personally seen is curiosity like the above.
Something even more curious is trying wearing a HT ham radio with a hand microphone. While wearing a paddle holstered 1911. All the questions you will have will be about the radio, absolutely no one notices the firearm, or if they do they dismiss it as “normal” since the radio is more abnormal. If my thoughts regarding that are correct, it means that slowly we’re winning the normalization fight.

Cops, Parades, and Open Carry
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sat, 06/11/2011 - 16:40No surprise to the rest of us though absolutely NOTHING happened. While at the Genesee community days today the wife and I were open carrying. There were numerous sheriffs deputies and state patrol walking around the area. While there we saw something quite interesting form in the sky.
We stopped and chatted with the local sheriff after spotting a funnel cloud and took the opportunity for pictures.
We actually chatted with him for an extended period of time about open carry and different things he’s run into. Evidently people often come up to him when working events like this and the county fair informing him of people who are carrying firearms. His response to them is usually along of lines of, "and this is a problem because.” It reminded me of the Pullman PD officer I met who looked at the person freaking out and pointed at the gun on his hip and said, “I have a gun, what’s the difference?”
It’s Idaho and as he put it, “It’s all that remains of the Western frontier.” It’s talking with officers like him that reminds me while some are driving the us versus them wedge, it is by no means all officers doing it. Especially since he has evidently gone to Boomershoot. I told him he needs to come again.
To further put the icing on the cake, I gave Mike one of my blogger cards. He had mentioned having a holster shirt but couldn’t remember the manufacturer. After I was going to finish this post I was going to email him for the brand. In my email I just got a message from him. He has one of these and really likes it. Anywhere else that whole exchange would probably have been forgotten.
There was a nice car show, here’s a simple set I did.
I got a bunch of pictures from the car show as well, but those will be processed slowly and will probably end up dumped on my photography site.

Quote of the Day – Joe Huffman (03/09/2011)
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 03/09/2011 - 16:35There is something I learned in chess a long time ago which holds true in the gun games I play and it’s true in politics as well . It’s more important to not lose than it is win. Let the other guy take the chances and you win when they screw up. -Joe Huffman,
[I find this fits quite well with my comments on open carry. The focus needs to be on not losing. Our enemies will screw up on their own and when they do we can capitalize on their failure. Why expend energy and effort accomplishing a goal when your enemy can give it to you? Especially since when expend energy like that you risk making the mistake yourself. -B]

A Good Diplomat
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 17:26As I said previously when carrying you’re a diplomat, and Robb Allen does a fantastic job in his interview.
I think Caleb from Gun Nuts Media said it better than I can.
I want everyone who advocates for open carry to go to Robb’s blog and watch the video he did with the local ABC affiliate. That is how you advocate for open carry. He looks like a normal dude, doesn’t shout about A RIGHT UNEXERCISED IS LOST, and he certainly didn’t wave a shotgun around. Instead, he acted like a rational dude and made his points succinctly and intelligently. And he even wore pants.
Whether or not you like it, while carrying you are having to break down the negative stereotypes associated with carrying from the media. This is much more easily done by acting and behaving exactly like Robb did. Serious kudos to you Robb, that’s the way to win hearts and minds!

Open Carry and BBQ
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 23:37Some friends have a barbeque joint in Moscow, and they give a 10% discount for open carrying. I was in Moscow so I decided I’d stop in, and ended up hanging out for four hours. While I was there I couldn’t help but take pictures.

When open carrying, you are a diplomat
Submitted by Barron Barnett on Fri, 02/18/2011 - 22:52The whole open carry incident in Michigan is getting annoying and it’s becoming annoying for numerous reasons. I stopped commenting on different threads because it seemed the majority of people just lacked critical thinking ability. It turned into a pointing game with people screaming that people were actually the equivalent of Joan Peterson and the Brady Campaign. All because they voiced their OPINION that carrying a long arm was unnecessary and runs a serious risk of causing damage. As Robb said, “you need to be prepared for the consequences”, that includes having people angry at you that would normally support you.
