Lazy Saturday

So the goal was to help some people this morning, then hit up VJs and meet up with Laurel to help her with an issue that she apparently has resolved.

When I showed up to help this morning it appears that there were enough people to show up early that it was already done when I showed up on time. So I decided that with so much time to kill it was time to have an impromptu appreciation day for Starbucks.

No I didn’t take this picture at Starbucks.

I was extremely glad I decided to say thank you by paying into the coffers of a local business that didn’t discriminate against gun owners. The reason I was glad was I stopped off to talk to Charles at Sure Shot in Moscow to tell him how TMW’s new holster is working. Upon arrival I hear the following:

Customer: “What the hell is up with the Moscow Co-Op? Have you seen their sign?”

Charles: “Yeah, I’m not sure why they put that up there.”

Me: “Okay, what the hell did I just miss?”

So to provide a little bit of background, for the past three years the following has been visible on the sign at Sure Shot traveling from Pullman to Moscow.

Sorry for the tree, it was raining and I didn’t want to run across the street for a better picture. Lazy I know but you can still read it!

So it ends up that the Moscow Co-Op at some point recently decided that was not proper and posted this as a reply.

WTF!?

The Co-Op sells natural foods etc, WTF does their business have to with firearms? Why are they knocking another small business in Moscow they are not even in direct competition with? TMW and I both upon seeing the sign said, “So much for the Co-Op.” Upon arriving at VJ’s I asked Corina and Dan about it, they were both pissed along with Laurel and Mike, were going to be writing a letter, and we then got into a long discussion where we were going to find items that other places just don’t carry. For those out of the area, we can actually get locally raised meat including buffalo and elk. This really angered us because while one might view the Co-Op as mainly the domain of those that have “Make Love Not War” stickers, none of us have ever been hassled for carrying in the store and have always been treated with a high level of courtesy. This though seems like a low ball shot that was unnecessary and just plain rude. Especially since a lot of us used the Co-Op on a regular basis.

I did learn from Charles he got about 10-15 calls today and numerous locals coming in to ask about the Co-Op sign. He does have a response which will be going on the outbound side coming from Moscow to Pullman. Numerous locals came in asking about it, so on the upside it has generated more traffic for Sure Shot. No such thing as bad publicity right? I would also like to point out I made sure to idle my Ford Earthfucker in the parking lot while TMW took a picture of the sign. I needed to offset the SMUG emissions.

After that though the subject turned much lighter, spent a lot of time chatting and took some other pictures as well as helping with some other miscellaneous problems. The pictures will be posted tomorrow after we all get together for dinner and give Abigail her gift. I don’t normally do artsy photos but Corina gave an idea while I was playing with my new camera. Below is the result, the only processing I did was cropping it.

Now to clean the house since people are coming over tomorrow.

An interesting visitor

I’m really not concerned by the below, though I do find it kind of interesting. I wonder if it is the prospective new police chief for Pullman.

Doing research on who to put on the naughty list maybe? As I said before I hope that he is not a stereotypical southern Californian police officer, and who knows he may actually be a really nice guy. Even if he is stereotypical, the officers are the ones I usually interface with. Yes it’s always been good.

It’s just it is just damn scary. I’m glad I don’t live in Pullman anymore, for more reasons than just that; though small town cops are awesome!

Pullman’s prospective new police chief

So I just found out that the choice for Pullman’s new police chief is a Captain from Claremont California. I have never had any issues in Pullman with concealed carry; however I have heard from other friends that have had issues with the chief but not with Pullman officers however. I was not able to attend the meeting however I wish I could have so I could have asked what his stance on concealed carry and his views on self-defense.

As the police chief is mainly a bureaucrat I’m not too overly worried about it, especially with how the officers themselves act and conduct themselves. We shall wait and see; if I end up running in to Commander Tennant at some point I’ll make sure to ask what his thoughts are on the new chief. I must say though I really would have preferred for Commander Tennant to become the new police chief from my experiences talking with him.

As I no longer live in Pullman however it doesn’t affect me too much though I do still work there.

Go Galaxy 15

A friend just told me about this. I for one am hoping that the Galaxy 15 will at least get close enough to disrupt MTV for the East Coast. Taking it out would be down right AWESOME, but they are claiming there will be no collision! As I no longer have TV service and live off of streaming internet, I could care less which is why I’m cheering for the Galaxy 15. For once it’s a zombie I wouldn’t shoot on sight. It doesn’t want my brain, it wants my MTV which I don’t care about.

Site Update

I was having some issues with different services reading my blog. I discovered that there were some issues internally in the site. I have since spent my evening redoing the site and porting over all my old data. This is more of a test blog to make sure everything is back up and running correctly.

Should this work you’ll see more up tomorrow.

About the Motto

Waiting for someone else to solve your problems is not a solution. I came to this realization in high school when I worked as a lifeguard at scout camp. If a swimmer went missing it was at least 15 minutes before a rescue dive team could be on site. After 15 minutes odds are you’re recovering a corpse to give his parents to bury. During those 15 minutes though the lifeguards are still actively searching and working to find the missing swimmer. Though not as effective as scuba divers, it’s better than nothing. The idea that help is on the way never enters the mind because who cares about 15 minutes from now, they need help NOW.

While one could say being a lifeguard obligated us, that doesn’t change the fact though anyone can train to help in an emergency. If someone attempts to rob myself or my wife, my first instinct is not going to be to grab my phone and dial 911 for help. Statistically by the time they show up they’ll be placing me in a body bag. Instead I will react in defense of wife and myself. Why, because I can not tell the attacker to wait while I call the police, and then to wait again while they respond. Waiting for help just allows the problem to continue getting worse.

In dive training you learn to control your instinct to panic and think problems through. Why, because at 60 feet all that is there is you and your dive buddy. Panicking will most likely get you and your buddy killed. I had good instructors who regularly threw unexpected failures at us including things that would cause panic. By the end I learned to recognize panic much like when people realize they’re “behind the power curve.” More importantly when you’re panicking you’re doing the same thing as waiting for help.

Why The Minuteman

For those who know me this title fits me to a tee. Not because of my “rebellious spirit” but because at a moments notice I am moving and acting to help those around me. Whether it be taking up arms in defense of someone who cannot defend themselves, or hopping in my truck and going and pulling someone home that just broke down two blocks away.

The statement of who and what the militia and minutemen were is long and drawn out and a cause for great modern debate as supposedly now it’s the National Guard. I’m here to tell you it’s not, it is any and every citizen that is willing to do what is necessary to protect those around them in their own community.

Many ask why I feel this way and the answer is always the same, history. I’ve studied it, learned from it, and found things that embodied the best in humanity, and things that were the worst. Truly one of the best and most iconic of the American spirit was the Minutemen.
