I’ve known about this for a while but I figured I’d share it since many won’t know about the effort that goes into maintaining transmission lines.

Balls of steel.  That is a maneuver that has a pile of  things that can go wrong at any moment.  Most of those things will likely result in death.  That said it can and is done safely on a regular basis.

For those who don’t understand how attaching a helicopter to a 500 KV line doesn’t result in things failing you just need to remember what matters is a difference in potential.  The helicopter is a floating isolated point.  Since its isolated, its reference to “ground” can be shifted.  In this case as the helicopter approaches they use the wand to tie the helicopter to the same potential.  Once the helicopter at line match, so does everything else on the helicopter, including the people.

Once that connection is broken though the systems start drifting apart again.

And lets not forget if the weather turns there’s now another huge problem since wind can cause the helicopter to collide with the power lines.  The lesson there is a helicopter has 74,000 moving parts, all moving in opposition to each other, each with the common goal to kill you.

Still looks like it would be an interesting job, at least as a pilot anyway.  I have no interest on sitting on top of a 500 KV line, despite my knowledge of how it works.  I also know at 500KV it wouldn’t take much to create the current necessary to kill me should a piece of personal protective equipment fail.

It’s been awhile since we’ve come back around to the origination that gave me the idea for this list.  For a quick history of this type of behavior:

Remember, these are the agents that were caught, there’s going to be a large group that are not caught. The TSA isn’t held responsible for lost and stolen items, they receive a free pass. There is no incentive for them to solve the problem other than bad PR.  But we have a new bad agent to add to the list:

TSA baggage screener Sean Henry, 32, was arrested on Tuesday after a sting operation conducted jointly by the TSA and the Port Authority Police Department caught Henry leaving the airport with two iPads that had been planted as part of the sting, as well as numerous other electronics devices he had allegedly stolen from passengers.

I applaud the officers who did the right thing, but the fact is the government has created a situation that foments this type of behavior.

A Berry Hill Police Officer has been arrested in Murfreesboro on five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor charges. The 56-year old was arrested on Friday afternoon. Originally when the story first aired, WGNS only told you about one charge of sexual exploitation, it was later confirmed that White faced five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor charges.

Often children are told to trust police officers to the point of unquestioned faith.  People forget that sometimes the most evil monsters find ways to hid in plain sight.

Mr Coates has a luxury that we don’t; the luxury of anger. He can afford to get mad at people in traffic, to confront people in the grocery check-out line, and those little moments of anger that we all have on any given day. I can’t afford them. It’s not because there’s a monster in me waiting to shoot people. It’s because I’m worried about the monster inside everyone else, and I would like to go the rest of my life without ever drawing a gun in anger again. At the end of the day I don’t carry a gun because I’m hoping to shoot people any more than I wear my seat belt because I’m hoping to get in a car crash. I carry a gun in case someone decides that the contents of my wallet are more valuable to them than my life is; and I wear my seatbelt in case someone decides that the text message from their friend is more important than looking at the road while doing 90 on the freeway.

Caleb Giddings – The luxury of anger

[It’s amazing how many people don’t seem to be able to comprehend the above.  I remember one time while carrying someone trying to provoke something and just ignoring it.  Insults were thrown and I merely chugged on.  If verbal abuse is what that guy needed to feel better about himself, well I ultimately feel sorry for him and those around him.  I however ultimately didn’t care because honestly throughout my life I’ve learned to not give a crap about what some stranger thinks of me.  He may think I’m a coward and he can think all he wants.

But here’s a random thought?  Who’s the real problem?  The man who ignores verbal insults and attempts to deescalate the situation, or the guy who commits assault along with other petty crimes?  I carry a gun for the same reason as Caleb.  While some in this world may consider it their goal in life to provoke physical altercations and go looking for trouble, there is a great many of us who walk through our lives with only one request and one goal, “Leave me the hell alone.” Many of us will go through great lengths to just be left alone, including trying to deescalate, go the other direction, etc.

I don’t know how to describe it, but carrying a firearm causes a great sense of responsibility to well from within.  So much so I don’t care about petty issues.  I know my monster and I know how to control him.  When I strap on the firearm, the chains become tighter.  Not because I’m afraid of him getting out, but because at that point the times when he can act become considerably more limited and reserved.  Ultimately many issues that I might have otherwise been angry or upset about just result in me not caring because in the grand scheme it doesn’t matter. –B]

SSCC #474 & #475: Franklin County

According to court documents, 28-year-old Brandon Gibson said that two law enforcement officers stormed into his home one morning in August 2011 and alleged that Gibson had given a false name on an earlier complaint call from a neighbor.

Gibson said that the deputies entered his home illegally, used excessive force and arrested him without probable cause, after tackling him to the ground in front of his two young children.

Here’s the kickers though.  He was never charged with what they claimed he did upon entering the house and the charges used to cover the actions of the police officers were dropped.

So what we have evidence of is two officers were bored did some stupid crap violating the rights of a citizen and attempted to cover for it.
