A Compromise

So evidently there was a way for TMW to opt out of the Union.  However there was still a small caveat, the 3% that would go to the dues still has to go elsewhere.  More specifically it has to go to a charity of her choice.

Then we had an epiphany.  We’re going to just have the 3% go to the Second Amendment Foundation.  I guess that’s a compromise since I already send money their direction anyway.  I would send it to someone that works against the unions, but I am not aware of any organizations that do so.

I highly recommend sending donations their way, they have produced very good results.

Robbery by employment

Today TMW was happy she had a “job interview”.  I use quotes because it ends up it was really just a job offer.  It would be a regular day shift which makes life considerably easier on us.  Rotating schedules and night shifts are a pain.

So the above was the “Yea”, now for the “Boo”.  It ends up that this job offer had one string, one serious string which has placed my rage meter through the roof.

This string violates one of our core morals, evidently the facility CNAs are unionized.  She has no choice if she takes the position, she must join the union and pay 3%, yes 3%, of her salary to the union.  She must pay 3% of her earnings so that someone can “represent” her, to “collectively raise wages” and aid in the event of “wrongful” termination.

Think about that for a second, the dues paid to the union are a percentage of wages and the union is collectively bargaining for higher wage.  They make more money by getting raises for workers that aren’t that productive.   The union automatically gets new members when someone wants a job.  They get new income to use to support their political ends, because someone wants to work.  They get this income even if the new employee does not want anything to do with the union.

Unions are dying.  Especially when you consider the fact that many are in unions because they are given no choice to get employment.  Morally we have a serious issue, we want absolutely nothing to do with the union.  She doesn’t have to take the new job, but she would actually make more in the new position, the commute is considerably shorter, and the hours and schedule would be more regular.  The difference in pay is more considerable when given the fact she is paying more in income tax to a state she doesn’t live in than she would in dues. The main thing we want is the shorter commute, and the wage isn’t really higher than Idaho, it is mainly the shift in taxes versus dues. She would take the job even if she was returning back to the night shift. Those extra perks are nice, but we’d ditch them to get rid of the union.  At the same time Unions have helped contribute to the fiscal problems in government and need to be destroyed.  The union of choice in this case also appears to be one of the most despicable, SEIU.

Unions are pointless and do nothing more than take money to fund politicians that wouldn’t get elected any other way.  Now it ends up that their method of collection is by force, preventing employment of those unwilling to pay.  If you want to work, you have to be willing to fund whoever they like.  If we really had “free employment”, union membership would be optional and not forced.  Though if that were to ever happen, unions would finally die and their power would be lost.

Site Changes and Updates

I did a bunch of backend work over the weekend and have been continuing with trying to do some other changes I would like.  I changed the Trackback mechanism and am now using a different module.  I got tired for it putting the pingbacks in the comments.  If you see anything that’s broken let me know.

I’m currently working on a theme change which should allow the trackbacks and the similar content links to exist between the post and comments. I’m not sure if the theme change is going to be successful.

I’ve also done some reordering to the menu blocks trying to make things more user friendly.  If you have any ideas on something you would like to be different let me know.  Yes, I do this for me, but I don’t mind trying to increase usability if it’s a simple change.

Quote of the Day–Bowers v DeVito(02/08/2011)

The Constitution is a charter of negative liberties; it tells the state to let people alone; it does not require the federal government or the state to provide services, even so elementary a service as maintaining law and order. – Bowers v. DeVito

[Some would read the above and think of it as a bad thing.  I read the above and see freedom and liberty.  The reason I see freedom and liberty in the above is because both of those require personal responsibility.  I am personally responsible for my family and I’s safety, there is no one else to pass the buck on to.  As such the state has absolutely no business what so ever limiting or restricting my access to commonly used tools for this purpose.  -B]

Patriot Act Dying?

The vote on the Patriot Act extension was today and there was a small surprise at the end.

With the three provisions set to expire February 28, lawmakers voted 277-148 in favor of legislation to renew them until December 8, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed under House rules.

It is disappointing that it was not a complete and utter blow out, but it’s still nice to see they couldn’t scrounge up the votes.  Of course Obama is crying that it is necessary to protect our borders and national security.  The only thing that Act has done is allow the government to abuse its citizens.  Hopefully that pile of garbage will stay dead and expire, though they will probably find a way to resurrect it.

Don’t Come Here

Seriously it sucks!  Stay where you are, believe me your better off.  People from California have utterly destroyed where I grew up, and continue making it worse.  They actually totaled it so bad I hate going back to visit family and friends.  Every once in a while I meet someone who legitimately loves freedom that fled the hell hole that is California.

Let me put it a way these people might understand, stop destroying the pristine wilderness because you think it would look better if you changed how something was done.  You moved here because you hated how you destroyed your previous location.

So let me say this to those wanting to leave California and find some place new, the Palouse sucks.  There’s nothing to do within 150 miles, nothing but rolling wheat fields, and evidently we’re not that bright out here either.  You just don’t want to move here, it totally sucks.

Update: HB 1016-2011-12 Just Passed the House

I just received an email from Joe Schmick:

For your information, HB 1016 just passed the House with a vote of 88-4. I voted in support of the bill. It will now go to the Senate for their consideration.

If you haven’t written your Washigton State Senators yet, now is the time to do so. You can use my letter as a starting point.

Update:
Unsurprisingly the 4 nay votes were from the Peoples Republic of Puget Sound.

  • Jeannie Darneille
  • Zack Hudgins
  • Ross Hunter
  • Larry Springer
  • If you live in their districts, remember what they think of you come next election.

    Update 02/08/2011:
Senate Judiciary passed it this morning. There was no debate. The decision was a unanimous “do pass”. It is now on the way to the Senate Rules Committee.

How do you F*** up the National Anthem?

Christina Aguilera was chosen to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl 45. How hard can that be?  Apparently for Christina Aguilera it was very hard.

Apparently, Christina Aguilera got too involved in her performance to notice that the line is not, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.” See the video below for her failed national anthem attempt.

The line Christina Aguilera erred on was, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.”  According to a statement released by the singer, her Super Bowl flub was due to the gravity of the movement.

I agree with TamSlick on this one:

Seriously, how do you not know the lyrics to the national anthem? That’s like flubbing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" or "Twinkle Twinkle"…

Heat of the moment or not, you do not screw up the National Anthem of all songs, its just not done.  No Excuses.

Christina Aguilera has now joined the many other celebrities who have fudged the National Anthem in one way or another.
