So I got a new toy over the weekend. This one is specifically going to be geared for competition.
That is a shiny new XDm 5.25 in .40 S&W. The reason it is bi-tone and in 40 is quite simple, “Because Race Gun”.
Now I have the title of this the way I do for a very good reason. Especially for other USPSA shooters who may get a new toy. I got to the range and showed it to a couple other shooters while still in the case before setup began. In other words I showed it as pictured above. Neither I nor the CRO I was talking to really thought anything about it at the time. It was in it’s case, no one was actually handling it, all should be well.
Evidently not. I got an email from the other RO after he was thinking about it last night and got a forwarded message from an NROI instructor on the topic.
The key is “was the trigger available”? The answer for most cases is “yes” therefore DQ unless done at a safety table.
Currently I’m a bit lost because there is no rule in the rule book that would cover this that I can see. The closest is 10.5.1 and 5.2.1, except the gun never left the case, it was just opened. However according to NROI instructor if the trigger is visible you’re off to Dairy Queen. I’m going to send an email off to get clarification on this one. That said, be advised and be safe. If you have an XDm and you leave it in the stock case to take to a match, don’t open it except at the safety table. It could bite you.

[As I’ve said before this is why I get angry. Our opponents can try and beat around the bush but the bottom line is they ultimately want to disarm people to make them easy victims.
The government wants to disarm the law-abiding because honestly, those are the only people who will actually bother to obey. Criminals don’t, why would they? They ignore all the other laws already what’s one more?
As Linoge recently said, they’re anti-rights cultists and fetishists. Even more than that though, I think they have a serious hate for women despite their arguments to the contrary. They merely use those arguments as a smoke screen to pluck at people’s heart-strings.
Ultimately though they would prefer a woman dead and raped in an alley than standing over the cooling corpse of her attacker. Period, end of discussion. If you want to argue that isn’t the case, explain how disarming women aids in accomplishing the latter and not the former. -B]
That is all sorts of awesome. And it isn’t just one church either, there are numerous churches from Texas to North Carolina.
It’s nice to see some not rely on blind faith and miracles to save them but instead see that good happens through the deeds of others. Some may see religion in that, others may not. In the end though people who have faith in miracles to save them while rejecting the tools they can use themselves drive me insane, which brings me to this joke:
A fellow was stuck on his rooftop in a flood. He was praying to God for help.
Soon a man in a rowboat came by and the fellow shouted to the man on the roof, “Jump in, I can save you.”
The stranded fellow shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.”

To this God replied, “I sent you a rowboat and a motorboat and a helicopter, what more did you expect?”
Why should I expect god to lift a finger for me if I won’t lift one for myself?
So there are some ranges that evidently aren’t as anal as they should be regarding handling of firearms while the range is cold and people are down range. As I’ve said before, this really ticks me off and today we have an example of the consequences.
There are so many things wrong with that second sentence.
There are no excuses for this incident. The bottom line is this issue can be traced back to at a minimum of impatience while wanting to pack up and leave. At best it is gross negligence without using the most important tool to man kind, the grey matter between the ears.

*Update* Evidently this is an unsupervised range. I’ve seen my share of incidents at unsupervised ranges and am not the biggest fan. Like Wizard, I won’t go to one by myself. Either I or my companion stay at the line and act as an RO. The only reason cowboy rules like that go on is because no one steps up to the plate. The results of no one stepping up can be seen above.
So lately there has been lots of talk of printed firearms. What we forget is that working with metal overall isn’t the most difficult of tasks.
It appears that someone took the blade of a spade and made himself an AK Receiver.
Honestly I don’t understand how people can think that any particular item can be “banned” from possession. Man kind is a tool maker and he can figure out how to make the tools for himself if he cannot purchase them. Once the cat is out of the bag, it’s out of the bag. No matter how hard you try, it isn’t going back. Case in point, working firearms found in prison. If that doesn’t indicate your efforts will be futile, you need mental help. The bottom line is people will make weapons, period, end of discussion.
Now the question is, why are people attempting to keep the honest and law abiding from obtaining them?

Brethren and Sistern, there is an obvious lack of sufficient sermonizing here, so let me turn to the Book of Armaments, Chapter Four, Verse One: “Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Beyond It.” There is no codicil that says “Unless you’re in a shoot house,” or “Unless you’re going really fast.”
It’s not okay to shoot your fellow range patrons EVEN… and I’d like to make this perfectly clear… EVEN IF THE RSO SAYS IT’S COOL.

[While yes we can jokingly say wouldn’t it be nice at times if that were true. But honestly thank god Tam is right. Just because the RSO says your safe doesn’t absolve you from maintaining control of your weapon and properly identifying your targets.
Everyone is a RSO, period, full stop, end of discussion. We all know these tacticool operators do and say some crazy crap. The problem is impressionable youth take it and accept their quotes as gospel. What happens in the end though is Mr. Tacticool ventilates someone who didn’t need ventilating. The response from Fanbois? Justification, absolvance, and excuses. None step up to the accountability and responsibility department. Both of which are critical for gun owners.
I wish I had saved it but recently I had stumbled across a video on Youtube and the individual in the comments started arguing against the four rules. His complaint was because you need exceptions to the rules for things like maintenance and training. The way around this is to create rules where no exceptions exist. Funny thing for me is I’ve never needed an exception for maintenance or training. Instead I use a dummy gun, or I watch my muzzle while cleaning and disassembling. I promptly put him on my do not listen or watch list.*
Why? Because the 4 rules are rules, without exemption and the wonder is you have to break two of them to end up in deep trouble. I am willing to accept Alan’s condensed rules as it is merely the 4 rules condensed and non-redundant. This individual had used a real weapon as a demonstration piece under the crux of it being unloaded. Unloaded or not, I don’t like people pointing guns at me. Why? Because it’s how people get hurt and the comment after is always, “I thought it was unloaded.” Grab any number of safe training methods, leave the real guns off to the side.
Back to the subject at hand though. The nut behind the trigger ultimately has the responsibility of the safe handling and discharge of their weapon. Failure to do so cannot be blamed on anyone other than the shooter. The RSO is there as an extra set of eyes to try and stop things before they become unsafe. Even then though final responsibility falls with shooter.
They don’t DQ RO’s when a shooter does something wrong for failing to stop them in time. So why should anyone get a pass in this case? -B]

It is possible and quite probable he pulled the video after trying to justify pointing a weapon at something he didn’t really want destroyed. It was a video on muzzle up vs muzzle down and weapon retention. If you know of the video, bump the link. He was using an AR.
So it appears the Wounded Warrior Project went and shoved their foot in their mouth with regards to a large segment of the population which graciously throws money at them.

In case you didn’t read the first link, this includes doing interviews with firearm related talk radio. Given that it would also prevent firearm events raising funds for their cause, including donations of firearms to be raffled to raise funds.
Now they are free to do whatever they would like, just the same I am free to send my funds to groups as I would like. I will say that refusing to talk on a radio show because they are gun related show isn’t probably the brightest thing to do. In the grand scheme it certainly feels like a snub, especially when someone is going out of their way to give them free publicity.
So instead from now on when I would normally give to WWP I will instead send it to Soldiers’ Angels. Honestly this is where I send most of my support anyway. If you would like to continue donating to the WWP, that is your call and I am not knocking their cause or mission. I will say I am offended that they would politicize a stance over a fundamental right and use their mission and purpose as a screen. It appears that I’m not the only one thinking about cutting WWP off from their wallet either.
If the WWP wants to discriminate against gun owners or otherwise snub our overwhelming generosity to those who need it, especially those in uniform, we will find someone else who does want it. It’s what we do.
I will say that Soldiers’ Angels was at the Gun Blogger Rendezvous this year and the fundraising was directed at them. Patti Patton-Bader’s youngest son was there as a representative of the group and had a blast shooting steel and even got him interested in USPSA. We even got him hitting the steel out at 950.
So at least it appears that Soldiers’ Angels has their head on straight and realizes that it doesn’t matter where it comes from, what matters is the mission and the cause. It pains me that I even have to think about it, but they made the choice not me. So, if you’d rather not donate to WWP but still want to support wounded troops, Soldiers’ Angels works, quite well I might add.
You don’t just have to donate money, there are many options from sewing to writing letters to support the troops. Honestly, when you consider it, Soldier’s Angels has the benefit of being much more personal in their approach, especially for the wounded.
I’ve spoken my piece. Wounded Warrior Project will no longer get a cent out of my wallet. Instead I will send that and more to a project fully focused on the mission of providing support to wounded warriors as well as their brother’s in arms.
